How long does it usually take Webtoon to accept or reject your Ad Revenue application for your webtoon canvas? The most common and expected answer is “it depends”, which doesn’t give you straight answer but it truly does depend. There are two important aspects you need to think about to get an idea of how quickly your application will get approved and when it would be best to send your application.
These aspects are adherance to webtoon guidelines and the number of episodes your series currently has.
This is aside from the already apparent requirements of reaching over 1000 subscribers and 40,000 monthly pageviews. You will not be able to send an application otherwise.
Now, the first aspect is pretty much expected as webtoon is very strict when it comes to regulating their rules and terms. So, be sure to read their guidelines completely and thoroughly.
A basic rundown of the webtoon guidelines, how they affect your application, and what you should do to keep your success rate high.
Webtoon checks your episodes for approval.
Your canvas webtoon should be kept properly censored. Nudity and sexual scenes are a big NO in webtoon. However, they’re not completely barred. There are still plenty of NSFW episodes on many canvas webtoons, they are just completely censored. Some are able to manage it seamlessly, while others may look a bit choppy, some just take it out altogether and move it to their patreon accounts. The last part is a good way to go about NSFW episodes because it would make it more enticing for readers to join your patreon, thus giving you extra income. But rather than take out the scenes altogether, try to make a simpler, more censored version of the episode while still hinting at the complete version on your patreon.
Also, don’t forget to tick this in order to avoid getting flagged down:
- Just so you know, webtoon is ALWAYS watching. Especially if you have a relatively good enough amount of views and readers.
It goes without saying that webtoons without NSFW content whatsoever are the safest bet for getting approved easily. This is not to say that those that do have such content won’t be approved, it will just be harder for such series.
Does webtoon reject applications from canvas series that have NSFW content? Yes, they’ll even take down episodes that they deem go against their guidelines. How do I know? I have several canvas series and one of them was rejected and had episodes deleted because of the sex scenes. Yes, they were censored, although I must admit they were still a bit too spicy from the colors to the panting (the non-NSFW ones had no issue in the application process).
With all that said, NSFW canvas webtoons will take a long time to be evaluated. You’re looking at around a month or so. But if you do a good job of censoring, it can be lower than that. One thing to note is that your webtoon ad revenue application’s result may roll over to the next month and you could still get rejected. In that case, you will need to reapply and you will need to make sure you still hit the required 1000 sub and 40,000 pageviews.
For example: your March analytics hit the requirements so you apply on April. Your results don’t arrive until May and it’s a rejection. Unofrtunately, your April stats didn’t hit the required numbers so you won’t be able to reapply immediately on May. You will have to wait until the next month when you’re able to reach the requirements.
On the flip side, if you get approved, you won’t have to worry about having to constantly hit 40,000 pageviews every month. Even if you go below that, you won’t be taken out of the program and you will continue to earn money.
If you have themes that are not suitable for young audiences like suicide, bullying, murder, excessive blood, etc., make sure you put a proper disclaimer ahead of the episodes and, much like with NSFW content, make sure to tick the check for mature warning on your series.
One other subtle thing to check is that you don’t violate intellectual property rights by adding branded content or actual images of official works. For example, I once recommend a novel I love on an episode using the official cover and that episode was flagged down. Like I said, webtoon is always watching… and properly at that.
Now, once you’ve checked for all the issues you may have with webtoon’s guidelines, the next thing you need to think about is the number of episodes you have. This is one thing they don’t really tell you on their website. If you have over 15 episodes by the time you apply, you won’t have to wait long. If you have over 20 episodes and no issues with the guidelines, you’ll be approved within a few business days (EST time).
The problem lies if you have less than that. Approval will take a while since it would be hard to properly gauge your series with such limited number of episodes. Even if it’s completely free from any guideline issues and safe for all ages, it will still take some time to be approved. It would be best to supplement this by uploading more episodes as soon as possible. A safe bet to apply is when you already have over 15 episodes.
How long does it take for webtoon Reward Ads to be approved?
A quick reminder that webtoon reward ads and viewer ads are different. As for the webtoon rewards program, the one that was announced to have ended back in 2022, that was a whole different thing as well. “Reward Ads” pertains to the program comics that reach 100,000 views in one month can apply for. And yes, you only need to hit this number once (unless you get disapproved).
The same issues apply to this program. You simply have to follow the rules and regulations, as well as have enough content available. Once you have all of these issues taken care of, your webtoon ad revenue application for the Reward Ads will be processed smoothly. Sometimes it only takes 2-4 days; as long as you don’t put up any questionable content while waiting for the result. Once you get approved, it becomes a whole other story, which we can talk about in a different post. In the meantime, just keep all these reminders in mind for when you apply to Webtoon’s Ad Revenue Program and you’ll do just fine.
With all of that said, I wish you the best of luck on your webtoon canvas journey!
